A two-stage waterfall on Spruce Creek in the eastern Catskill Mountains of New York, Kaaterskill Falls totals 260 feet in height, making it one of the highest waterfalls in both the state and the Eastern United States. When I came to visit this waterfall, I had not realized this about it, and thus, the sheer power blew me away. After having sat in a secret vantage point, eating lunch and taking in the view of the entire waterfall, my girlfriend and I made the trek down to the base of the waterfall. Just as I was beginning to climb into the river and setup my tripod, the dark storm clouds above us opened up, drenching me in rain. The river began to rise rather quickly, giving me very little time to properly compose the photograph. While I could have waited a bit longer, as the rain had ceased a few minutes after it began, I didn't want to risk the water level getting too high. Performing strictly by instinct, I composed the photograph the best I could and took the shot before quickly climbing out of the water. It wasn't until I got home a few days later that I was able to check the file to make sure it was truly sharp and of use. I got lucky.
