Deep in the woods of Hickory Run State Park is a boulder field where trees - such as the one pictured - grow up surrounded by rocks. They are isolated in their own right with hundreds of feet between each one. Climbed on by children, rained and snowed on throughout the years, they face adversity with the toughest of wills.
I remember sitting on a nearby rock, my camera setup on the tripod, my exposure already figured out. I remember waiting as the sun dipped in and out between the dark storm clouds overhead. I waited for the right moment, only for a young child or two to come over and climb over the tree I was trying to photograph. The parents came over shortly thereafter and proceeded to take pictures of their kids hanging all over the tree. Eventually they left and I managed to get this photograph.
But what is more important than the photo itself is the story that goes along with it. While these trees are much more resilient than those out in Joshua Tree National Park in California, they still sustain a lot of damage from people climbing on them. Imagine, for a moment, if you were trying to enjoy your day and all-of-a-sudden someone decided it a good idea to climb all over you? How would you feel? It may be a tree and it may have been there for many, many years, but it still deserves to be treated with the utmost respect.
