Perhaps the most popular tourist destination found in South Carolina, Angel Oak is a Southern like oak located in Angel Oak Park on Johns Island near Charleston, South Carolina. This tree is estimated to be over 400 years of age, standing 66.5 feet tall, measuring 28 feet in circumference, and producing shade that covers 17,200 square feet.
When deciding what to see on my week-long trip to South Carolina, I simply could not keep this gorgeous tree off of my list. Knowing that there were likely to be a large amount of other visitors no matter what time I went, I decided to get there by 9:00 in the morning when they opened, on a Monday. I wanted to be able to at least get a good composition picked out before being crowded. Somehow, however, I got very lucky as there were very few others there at the same time, allowing me to capture this peaceful photograph.
While I ultimately was unsure of the inclusion of the signs and posts that guard the tree, I have decided to keep them in as they help tell the story of the tree and what is done to preserve it.
